In building the high throughput screening operation at our institute, the Genera Laboratory automation systems were chosen for their flexibility to integrate a heterogeneous mix of equipment from different manufacturers and vendors. This has allowed us to shop competitively for each item and still have system integration software that is tailored to our needs. The development environment of Genera is well structured to allow resident programmers with Java experience to add new processes, equipment and data management protocols that were not originally envision when we first setup the system. During long screens it has been useful to have Genera e-mail me system messages keeping me abreast of any errors that equipment might have. We are looking forward to our continued use and development of Genera as our system integration software while our screening facility grows and accommodates new equipment.

Our objective at GSK was to build an automated platform to support a varietyof applications for our cell based assay technologies. Having a largecollection of diverse hardware we were able to easily integrate the entiresystem using the Genera. Retisoft was able to provide and develop driversfor all the instruments. They seamlessly integrated a Bosch rail, Staublirobotic arm and PTM servo gripper. The software was easy to learn andscheduling became a very straight forward operation. Retisoft providedexcellent online as well as in-house support. In fact, most software andmany hardware issues were solved over the phone.
The Genera suite of products provided us with an instrument integrationframework which we can readily use. We develop our own automated solutions for which instrument integration, and LIMS interfacing has never been easier. Retisoft has allowed us to break free fromrestrictions found in other scheduling software and has given us a control solution which is independent of the instrument vendors. It is an excellent and well supported product without the outrageous pricing.
In Mid 2004 my Biomedical Engineering group wanted to develop a set of software tools which would help us with the integration of robotic systems for our internal customers. We looked for software portability, a short learning curve, fast integration cycle and automated document generation for our applications. The software had to implement all the current robotic movement algorithms and functionality, and it had to follow Object Oriented Programming rules for code re-usability. We wanted it to be cost effective, easy to maintain and easy to use by a multi-site team of developers. A team of developers reviewed and evaluated state-of-the-art software products and decided to select Retisoft's Genera software for laboratories to fulfill our requirements. The project led to the architecture of programs organized in hierarchical layers which follow strict object oriented rules. Training and customer service from Retisoft accommodated our needs and efficiently taught the developers how to write complete assays, custom Genera drivers and web-based applications. We managed to integrate our full range of robotic platforms and tools within six months.
When we started to plan a high throughput screening facility we were very hesitant about choosing a central control software. The software had to control all the automated instruments and schedule the screenings. Our core facility is used by different research groups with broad biological assays. The system flexibility came to be of utmost importance and we did not have enough time to develop the control software in-house. After evaluation of several commercial software packages, we selected Retisoft's integrated automation platform. The one-week training class at Retisoft taught me how to develop Genera drivers, Supra plug-ins and custom Datapilot web pages. We have built a flexible system which includes a robotic arm, liquid handler, incubator and readers. Our web-based application provides users the freedom to control and monitor the system remotely. The detailed product documentation and friendly technical support made our work easy. We are looking forward to expanding our automated system with the Retisoft platform.
